Moving can be stressful, but if you take the time to plan and unpack smartly, it'll be a lot less painful. The first few weeks of living in your new home are crucial for getting settled and feeling like you're actually at home. To help with that, here are my top tips for getting organized after moving into your new place:
Create an unpacking plan to help you unpack your things.
When you unpack, you want to make sure that you take into account a few things before you begin. A good first step is to create a list of the tasks that need to be done, or have been done. Check your schedule for the day and write down all of the things that need to get done. You might also want to make extra copies so everyone can participate in creating their own lists. When you've completed this step, you can then begin tackling each item on your lists one by one.
To make your move as smooth as possible, keep an inventory of what's in each box. Color-code (or at least label) your boxes, and pack them by room. Pack a box with everything you need to set up your bed on your first night home, and pack one open box with all the stuff you need to get through the first 24 hours in your new place.
Unpack the essentials first and place in designated area.
When you're unloading your boxes, don't forget to make sure that food, water and medication are easily accessible. You'll also want to make sure you have towels and toiletries in the bathroom. After that, it's time to get dressed! Next, place all of your personal items into their respective spots: photos on the walls or desktops; clothes in drawers or closets; books on shelves or bookcases; keepsakes in drawers or cabinets. You'll also want to make sure there's plenty of room left over for baby toys and other things they'll need while they're growing up (like diapers!).
Begin with the most essential rooms.
When you're ready to start unpacking, work on the rooms that are most important to you first. Start with the kitchen if it's one of your most important rooms. This way, if cooking or food preparation is needed during this time period, you will have easy access to these areas.
As you unpack, de-clutter and organise your belongings.
As you unpack, try to place items in their proper homes. If an item doesn’t seem to have a home at this point, that’s okay! Also look for things you might want to keep but don’t necessarily need right now (like books or kitchen gadgets) until you have more space.
Unpack the kitchen items last.
If you're in a rush to unpack, save your kitchen for last. The kitchen is more likely than other rooms to have breakables and spills, as well as food smells that can attract dirt. Unpacking it first could save you time in the long run, especially if you want to move into a clean space quickly.
Packing a box of essentials before moving in can help you tackle the task at hand without being overwhelmed. Unpacking should take place over several days, or even weeks, depending on how much stuff you have. And finally, don't unpack your kitchen until you have to.
Moving can be stressful, but by following these tips and keeping your cool, you will accomplish the task with ease. Make sure to plan ahead and pace yourself so that you don’t get overwhelmed. Start with the things that are most important to you and do them first! Don't worry about unpacking everything at once; take your time and enjoy being in your new place.
